As performer, I love and enjoy performing! Literally, my first stage experience was at the age of 6. As a Malaysian Chinese, after obtaining my first Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Chemistry, my natural instinct tells me to get a job – a decent paying job, climb the corporate ladder; And if time permits, pursue my hobby of performing. So I did. I enrolled in a master’s study in the pharmacy school in USM. Not long did I realize that my hobby is really important to me. I crave the stage and the spotlight. That’s when I decided that I needed to pursue the arts and not the science researches.

I started performing actively in KL & Penang in 2011. Switching from laboratory chemistry to real-life human chemistry is not easy. I self-trained through teaching drama. Little did I know that after 6 months of teaching, I found a new calling – using drama to help my students to build confidence!

I started Newman Drama & Enterprise (Newman Drama) with the encouragement of John Newman who believes in what I do.

Today I manage and train with a small team of 6 teachers, providing drama classes in KL and Selangor to pass on not just acting skills, but equip our students with essential communicating skills to face the real challenge in this dramatic world.

What do you do currently in Newman Drama?

I teach drama classes; train teachers; produce showcase of our students’ performance.

What certification do you or Newman Drama have?

I have a Bachelor Degree in Science and I’m currently trained under the certification of Diploma in Teaching Speech & Drama with Trinity College London.

Share with us about your acting and drama journey.

My acting career started in The School of Arts, USM while working as an Art Research Assistant. A worthy highlight of my stagecraft included the female lead role of Mei Ling in Our Man in Beijing, an Australian – Malaysian collaboration produced by KLPAC and Australasian Chinese Theater. My last performance was playing the role of Rose Ang in Gallery of Death, produced by Theatrethreesixty in conjunction with the Theaterthreesixty  Festival 2015. Currently, I’m taking a break from acting to focus on the entrepreneurial work for Newman Drama.

Why do you love acting and drama?

I love the stage! I love the spotlight! Haha! Literally, when I’m on stage acting or performing (I sing too), I feel like I can take on the whole world! It gives me the sense of power that if I dare to dream and work hard for something, I can achieve it. Acting gives you that.

Acting allows me to tell stories too! And this is what life is all about for me. I love to tell stories; be it my own or others. Any worthy stories. Acting and the stage to me, is a platform to tell many stories, to inspire others!

Is acting important for you? Why?

Yes! Being in the arts, constant training makes a better artist. Acting is not just training but a source of inspiration for my line of work. In order to produce authentic and interesting performance with our students, we as drama teachers need to be constantly renewed refreshed in our skills!
